Quit smoking:
If you smoke, quit. Many options for quitting exist, including support programs, medications and nicotine replacement products. Also your GP can help you by providing information and advice. Tell your doctor you want to quit, and discuss your options together.
Alcohol:
There is evidence to suggest that drinking a moderate amount of alcohol, such as four to five glasses of wine a month, will help to reduce your risk of developing kidney cancer. The reasons for this are not fully understood.
However, you should not exceed the recommended daily amounts for alcohol because drinking an excessive amount will place you at risk of developing liver disease, liver cancer, and high blood pressure.
The recommended daily levels of alcohol consumption are between three to four units of alcohol for men, and between two to three units for women. A unit of alcohol is equal to about half a pint of normal strength lager, a small glass of wine or a pub measure (25ml) of spirits.

ExerciseIt is recommended that adults should do at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (for example, cycling or fast walking) every week. The exercise should be strenuous enough to leave your heart beating faster and you should feel slightly out of breath afterwards.
Examples of activities that you could incorporate into your exercise programme include:
- brisk walking
- hill climbing
- running
- cycling
- swimming
However, you should visit your GP for a health check-up if you have never exercised before or you are returning to exercise after a long lay-off. Read more about how to exercise.
Control high blood pressure:
Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure at your next appointment. If your blood pressure is high, you can discuss options for lowering your numbers. Lifestyle measures such as exercise, weight loss and diet changes can help. Some people may need to add medications to lower their blood pressure. Discuss your options with your doctor.

If you work with toxic chemicals, take special precautions such as wearing a mask and heavy gloves.
